pCSi – Preparing Students for Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

Science, technology, engineering, and math skills are important in today’s job market. As Michigan transitions to a high technology economy, demand for college-educated and highly skilled employees is expected to grow five to six times faster than the need for those with a high school diploma or lower. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields, in particular, will require college educated workers.

WCC’s pCSi Pre-College Summer Program

The pCSi Pre-College STEM Initiative is an intensive two-week summer orientation program to promote the STEM fields and to help incoming students whose math and writing skills are below college level.

pCSi supports STEM careers by preparing students to meet minimum requirements for entering college level math and science courses, exposing them to the sciences and applied technology, and introducing them to skills that will facilitate college success.

Upon completion of the program, approximately 60% of students increase their reading, writing, and math skills by at least one academic level.

The Structure of the pCSi Program

COMPASS academic achievement testing will be conducted on the first day of the program to determine the levels of instruction needed for each student. Students  will receive reading and writing instruction and tutoring tailored to their current skill levels each morning. Students will also meet with a faculty member in their STEM area of interest to work on a special project focused on lab development.

Eligibility to Participate in the pCSi Program

The program is designed for students entering 10th to 12th grades in the fall semester and for students that will be starting their first semester of college during the 2013-2014 academic year.
