Discontinued features and modified functionality in Access 2013
This article lists the changes in features and functionality between Microsoft Access 2013 and Access 2010. It also describes how the changes might impact your Access database and provides alternatives for some of the removed features and functionality.

Changes in Access 2013 |
| Access support of Jet 3.x IISAM | You can no longer open an Access 97 database in Access 2013. You’ll need to upgrade the file. To do this, open it in Access 2010 or Access 2007, save it in the .accdb file format, and then open it in Access 2013.
This change also affects databases that are linked to Access 97 databases. |
ACCDB is the recommended format for desktop databases.
Open the Access 97 database file in a version of Access later than Access 97 but earlier than Access 2013, and convert it to a version no earlier than Access 2000. Access 2013 supports Access 2000 and later versions, through Access 2010. |

In an Access app, the default character limit is 255, but it can be increased to 4000 in the field properties.
The Memo data type has been renamed “Long Text.” A Long Text field can contain up to about a gigabyte of data in a desktop database, and up to 2^30-1 bytes in an Access app. |

If you need to see clip art you stored in the Clip Organizer, and you have Office 2010, you can do a custom installation of Office 2010 to reinstall the Clip Organizer component. |

Discontinued features and changed functionality in Word 2013
Here’s a roundup of features that have been removed or that work quite differently in Word 2013.
- Clip Organizer is gone
- Picture Manager is gone
- Fax templates aren’t installed
- Creating a chart doesn’t automatically open a full Excel workbook
- Custom XML markup is removed
- Printer fonts aren’t automatically incorporated
- Some font types are no longer supported
- Some AutoCorrect features have moved
Clip Organizer is gone
Microsoft Clip Organizer has been replaced by a more up-to-date way to find images. Click Insert > Online Pictures to find and insert images from online sources, such as Bing Image/Video search, Flickr, and your SkyDrive or Facebook page, and from the Office.com Clip Art collection.
Picture Manager is gone
Microsoft Office Picture Manager isn’t included in the new Office—but if you need a standalone photo editing program, you can download Windows Live Photo Gallery for free.
Or you can edit photos without Picture Manager. Word has many built-in photo editing features, so you might not need a separate program.
Fax templates aren’t installed
Fax templates aren’t included anymore when you install Office. To download them when you want them, click File > New, and type fax in the Search for online templates box.
Creating a chart doesn’t automatically open a full Excel workbook
If you created or edited a chart in earlier versions of Word, a full Excel file opened for entering or editing data. In Word 2013, a simpler Excel file opens first, and then you can open a full Excel workbook if you want to. Here’s how to Add a chart to your document.
Custom XML markup is removed
Word 2013 can’t read the custom XML markup that may be in .DOCX, .DOCM, .DOTX, .DOTM or .XML files. It can open these files, but it removes the custom XML markup, and first you’ll see an error message saying Word is trying to open a file with custom XML markup. For more info, see Knowledge Base article 2445062.
Printer fonts aren’t automatically incorporated
Word used to automatically check your default printer for additional fonts to include in your font list. To improve performance, especially on mobile computers, Word no longer does this automatically.
To use fonts stored on your default printer:
- Click File > Options > Advanced.
- In the Show Document Content section, check “Use fonts that are stored on the printer”.
Some font types are no longer supported
As part of upgrading to the new Windows platform, Word no longer supports these font types: BitmapPrinterAdobe Type 1CFF/Type 2TTO.FON.
Here’s how to check for and replace unsupported fonts in your Word docs:
- Click File > Options > Advanced.
- In the Show Document Content section, click Font Substitution.
If all of the fonts in your document are supported, a message will tell you that don’t need to substitute any fonts.
- If there are unsupported fonts in your document, the missing font will appear in the Missing Document Font box. Choose a font that you want to substitute for it, and then click OK or Convert Permanently.
Convert Permanently changes the document permanently.
Some AutoCorrect features have moved
AutoCorrect and some formatting tools have been removed from the spelling error menu to make more popular commands easier to see. They’re still available, from File > Options.
To manage the AutoCorrect options:
- Click File > Options > Proofing.
- Click AutoCorrect Options.
Discontinued features and changes in Outlook 2013
If you are familiar with Microsoft Outlook 2010 or earlier versions of Microsoft Outlook, the following list describes features and functionality that have been discontinued or changed in Microsoft Outlook 2013.
- Calendar Publishing to Office.com The Publish to Office.com feature and the service it uses are being discontinued on April 5, 2014. After that date published calendars will not be available on Office.com. Even though we’re turning off calendars on Office.com, there are other ways to publish your calendar online. We recommend that you publish calendars using a different method before April 5, 2014. If you’re using Outlook connected to Exchange Server, see Share an Outlook calendar with other people and follow the steps to share your calendar using a Microsoft Exchange Server account. If you’re using Outlook with an internet mail account, see Share an Outlook calendar on Outlook.com.
- Exchange Delivery to Outlook Data Files (.pst) Upon upgrading to Outlook 2013, profiles that are configured to delivery Exchange Server account items to an Outlook Data File (.pst) continue to see the file in the Navigation Pane. However, all new items are delivered to an offline Outlook Data File (.ost) and Cached Exchange Mode is turned on for the Exchange account.
- Import/Export from applications The Import Internet Mail Account Settings and Import Internet Mail and Addresses options are discontinued. When exporting to Outlook 2013 data to a file, tab separated values, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft Excel aren’t supported. To export to Excel, we recommend exporting data to a comma separated values (CSV) file and then importing the CSV file in Excel.
- Journal Journal doesn’t appear on the ribbon in the new Navigation Bar (Navigation Bar: Commands at the bottom of the Outlook window that enable you to quickly navigate to Mail, Calendar, People, and Tasks.). The default special folder for Journal still exists and can be selected from the Folders view in the Folder Pane (Folder Pane: The column on the left side of the Outlook window that contains folders for each view, such as Mail or Calendar. Click a folder to show the items in the folder. Formerly the Navigation Pane in earlier releases.). Any existing Journal folders appear in the Folder Pane Folder List view. In Outlook Options, the Notes and Journal is removed. The Journal Options button and related dialog box are no longer available. The journaling feature is always disabled.
- Notes Notes doesn’t appear on the ribbon or in the new Navigation Bar (Navigation Bar: Commands at the bottom of the Outlook window that enable you to quickly navigate to Mail, Calendar, People, and Tasks.). The default special folder for Notes still exists and can be selected from the Folders view in the Folder Pane (Folder Pane: The column on the left side of the Outlook window that contains folders for each view, such as Mail or Calendar. Click a folder to show the items in the folder. Formerly the Navigation Pane in earlier releases.). Any existing Notes folders appear in the Folder Pane Folder List view. In Outlook Options, the Notes and Journal is removed. New notes have a default color of yellow, default size of medium, default font of 11 point Calibri, and display the date and time that the note was last modified. These options are not read and cannot be changed from any preferences or registry keys.
- ANSI PST creation The Outlook 97-2002 Data File (*.pst) option isn’t available when creating an Outlook Data File. This change doesn’t impact the automatic creation of ANSI offline Outlook Data Files (.ost) used to support alternate display names for Asian languages.
- Send/Receive Groups In Mail, on the Send / Receive tab, in the Send & Receive group, the Send/Receive Groups command is replaced with Send/Receive. The Download Address Book command, previously on the Send/Receive Groups list, is now on the ribbon in the Server group. Any previously customized Send/Receive groups are converted to a single group, previously known as All Accounts. If a custom server connection interval had been configured for the All Accounts Send/Receive group, this setting remain in effect for Outlook 2013.
- Dial-up Networking support Dial-up networking should be configured in Windows. After upgrading to Outlook 2013, default (LAN) connection settings are applied. On the Send / Receive tab, in the Preferences group, the Dial-Up Connection command is removed. In Outlook options, in Advanced, the Dial-Up connections section is removed. When modifying an Exchange Server account, More Settings opens the Microsoft Exchange dialog box. The Connection tab is removed. Outlook Anywhere configuration which was accessible on the Connection tab now appears on the General tab.
- Exchange Server Download Headers and Then Full Items mode This feature is discontinued. After upgrading to Outlook 2013 if this option was selected, it is automatically changed to Download Full Items.
- Exchange Server classic offline mode This feature is discontinued. Exchange Server accounts can be used online or in Cached Exchange Mode.
