Two WCC students in ATC-related programs brought home medals from the 54th annual SkillsUSA national competition held at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.

Ray Papierniak, a 19-year-old from Ann Arbor, became the sixth WCC student to win a national title in the Overall Welding category.

After winning a gold medal, Papierniak’s name will go up on the program’s Wall of Fame display alongside the other national champions, which includes current WCC faculty members Glenn Kay (1997), Alex Pazkowski (2010) and Brad Clink (2011).

Ashlea Carravallah picked up a silver medal at the event. She earned her second-place finish in her second year of competing in the Automotive Refinishing Technology competition.

Carravallah finished 10th last year, but worked with instructor Bobby Feldkamp — himself a former WCC student who won first and second-place medals in national competition — to improve her performance.

Another WCC auto student, Joe Eddy, competed in the Automotive Collision Repair category and finished 10th.

Both medalists were profiled in the most recent issue of On The Record. Read the full stories: Ray Papierniak  |  Ashlea Carravallah
